Screenings & Evaluations
Communication Screenings
A communication screening is a quick check of a child’s speech, language, and social communication skills to see if they’re developing on track. A speech-language pathologist uses this brief screening to identify possible delays and decide if a full speech evaluation or speech therapy is recommended.
Comprehensive Speech–Language Evaluations
A Comprehensive Speech–Language Evaluation is a full, in-depth assessment of a child’s communication skills. It includes standardized testing, observation, and caregiver interview to understand strengths and challenges in areas like understanding language, using words, speech sounds, social communication, play, feeding, and more.
After the evaluation, you receive a detailed written report with results, explanations, and clear next steps—including whether therapy is recommended and what goals or strategies would best support your child.
Evaluations through EarlySteps
EarlySteps is Louisiana’s early intervention program for children birth to age 3. It helps families get services like speech, feeding, or physical therapy when there are developmental concerns. Services take place in your home or daycare so your child can learn in familiar settings with you involved every step of the way. Our therapists are enrolled EarlySteps providers—we complete no-cost evaluations through the program and, when eligible, deliver EarlySteps therapy. Not every child is eligible to receive therapy services through EarlySteps, but everyone is eligible for an evaluation. Children who are not eligible for EarlySteps can still receive services directly through Fox Speech Therapy. We can help get you started.
Feeding/Swallowing Evaluations
A Feeding/Swallowing Evaluation is a detailed assessment that looks at how a child eats, drinks, chews, and swallows. A specialist observes feeding behaviors, oral-motor skills, sensory responses, and safety to identify what may be causing difficulties such as picky eating, choking, gagging, food refusals, or trouble managing textures and liquids. After the evaluation, families receive clear recommendations, next steps, and a plan to support safer, more successful feeding.
AAC Needs Assessments & Implementation Plans
An AAC Needs Assessment & Implementation Plan evaluates whether a child would benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)—such as picture boards, sign language, or speech-generating devices. The assessment identifies the child’s communication strengths, challenges, and most effective AAC tools.
Families receive a clear implementation plan outlining recommended AAC systems, setup and customization, and step-by-step guidance on how to teach and use the AAC strategy across daily routines.
